EN: “The City Is Open Source” is a city hacking project. But a hacker follows in most cases also an objective.

To make the project more interesting we add a defined objective: sustainablity. Our cities are not sustainable today. But we can not smash everything down and rebuild it from scratch. The most viable way to get to sustainable cities is hacking our existing ones – to transform them into green cities.

But sustainability is a very broad term. This project picks more specific objectives: “OPEN SOURCE”, “CIRCULAR DESIGN & ECONOMY” & “FREEDOM”.

But why this specific objectives in that combination?

Why this combination? First of all Open Source is an objective that is interesting enough to explore.

Ok. But why not just Open Source?

Open Source is a methodology not necessarily an objective itself. The other objectives are added for the cases where Open Source alone is not enough. And Circular Economy and Freedom make great picks because:

1. They overlap with Open Source in many areas anyway as you can see, when you read through the middle column of the main-page &

2. They try to explore positive visions and utopias for our future! And plausible positive visions and utopias are much harder to develop these days and are more fun because of this and also more interesting.  . . .

DE: Warum Open Source, Kreislaufwirtschaft und Freiheit?

“The City Is Open Source” ist ein City-Hacking-(Stadthacken)-Projekt. Und ein Hacker verfolgt in den meisten Fällen ein Ziel.

Um das Projekt interessanter zu machen, fügen wir eine festgelegte “Zielmarke” hinzu: Nachhaltigkeit. Unsere heutigen Städte sind nicht nachhaltig. Aber wir können sie nicht niederreißen und von Grund auf neu bauen. Der vielversprechendste Weg ist, unsere existierenden Städte zu hacken und so in grüne zu verwandeln. Mit Hacken auf ins Grüne Glück!

Nachhaltigkeit ist aber ein weiter und unpräziser Begriff. Dieses Projekt nimmt sich genauer definierte Ziele: Open Source, Kreislaufwirtschaft und Freiheit.

Aber warum diese Ziele und in dieser Kombination?

Warum diese Kombination? Zunächst einmal Open Source ist ein Ziel, das interessant genug für sich ist, um damit zu experimentieren. Ein Zeige- und Informationsgestus den man mal experimentieren kann für Street-Art.

Ok. Aber warum nicht einfach nur Open Source allein?

Open Source ist eine Methode nicht immer zwangsläufig auch ein Ziel. Die anderen Ziele sind hinzugefügt für die Fälle, in denen Open Source alleine nicht reicht. Und Kreislaufwirtschaft und Freiheit sind eine gute Wahl, denn:

1. Sie haben ohnehin viele natürliche und interessante Überschneidungen mit Open Source, was man beim Lesen der Mittelspalte der Startseite schnell mitbekommt, und

2. sie sind Versuche oder Entwicklungsansätze für positive Zukunftsvisionen und Utopien. Und plausible positive Zukunftsvisionen und Utopien sind gegenwärtig sehr sehr viel schwerer zu entwickeln und machen deshalb mehr Spaß und sind auch viel interessanter ; – )  . . .

(Nebenbei: “Dinge etwas anderes tun lassen als vorgesehen. Aber was anderes? Hacker haben auch ein Ziel” – ist der Grund, warum die Hackerethik so ungeheuer wichtig ist. Link 2)
