EN: During our City-Hacking-Summer Tour we came through the german cities Viersen, Schöppingen and Dortmund. The hackathon subject for these cities was Production – Manufacturing in an Open Source driven Circular City. How will it look like? Scroll down the post to find some of the hacks and a full collection of theses (a “manifest”) about the production in the open circular city. But the posting starts with images from the things we did. All images will enlarge if you click on them. The full set is on Flickr.

EN: Playing 2 – As mentioned before in the Viersen exhibition posting  – Viersen is a great city and this thing in the middle of the pedestrian zone is good proof for it. And it is a good illustration or reminder that things, that might start as a hack or intervention can become more permanent and institutionalized things in the future.

Sticker Art DSC08410

EN: …and repaired some broken sticker art and suggesting in that process a new method for this branch of streetart culture to be more circular – “screws instead of glues” (Ok, this would be something different. Of course. But maybe there could be next to sticker art another movement of “screw art”. Take a look for example at Käthes work done during the Stadtbesetzungsprojekt.

Dortmund

EN: I left Schöppingen to go to Dortmund to speak at the Innovative Citizen Festival that had the same subject this year – “The City Is Our Factory”. I attended there a workshop of Judith Schanz and Sabrina Großkopp about food packaging and preservation of food. And as I had a sample of the toolbox with me we also did some packaging hacking in the supermarket.

EN: I think this is an interesting idea!: To use those open structures like modular and reusable parts to extend the life and use of existing packaging. When you start to think about possibilities for less packaging waste the idea of an extended family of reusable food containers combined with a deposit system comes up relatively quickly. One of the problems for such a system would be, that you don’t just have to design, build and establish the containers but also a whole infrastructure for taking them back and redistribute them. Huge complexity and costs!

But if you use modular parts like the ones in the picture you don’t need to build the taking back system. The parts are modular and reusable and creative minds will come up with an ever growing list of ideas and possibilities how to use them. Therefore a market for the reselling of them can emerge. Some people will use them to build furniture, some for houses, some for toys, some …. to resell them to packaging manufacturers. They work like a currency. The taking back system can be build and emerge decentralized.

The idea is of course not complete yet. But maybe a great start, trace or question for further thinking. “Imagine there would be a law, that all packaging would have to be made out of pure gold. Noone would throw anything away!”

bags - gold _
EN: “Verpacken in Goldbehälter” = “Make packaging from gold.”

EN: The City Is A Factory! – “Theses”

EN: To make it easier to come up with ideas about production in the city, we started with a simple collection of theses. Die Stadtfabrik – The City-Factory is factory that is located in the city and that produces the city.

“Manifest”: The City Factory (Vs 0.5)

Production in an Open Source Circular City

Production has always been a part of the city. But with Digital Fabrication, Circular Economy and Open Source it will probably get back closer to the center and to peoples lifes. The City will be a Factory!

  • No waste, but resources (closed loops) – waste collecting systems become resource collecting and distributing systems.
  • Reusing, repairing, refurbishing is part of daily lives and is supported by infrastructure (e.g. repair shops), communication (e.g. repairing ads) and designs (e.g. repairable).
  • The City Factory produces a lot of items for the city in the city (mostly from resources found in the city) and uses – to make this easy and possible – for this:
    • Open Source Designs, that use
    • simple standards and standard methods and
    • commonly available parts and materials,
    • that are compatibel with digital fabrication tools,
    • have little energy consumption in the production,
    • and a clean production process.
  • The City and the City Factory is a place where you can learn how things are made and how to make them.
